As the weather was 35 degrees on the day we travelled I was so pleased we had booked a full day tour, passing many tired and sunburnt bike riders I knew we had made the right choice as you would not see all the Island on a bike unless super fit. Our trip included a train ride, lunch and afternoon coach tour, all with great guides and with opportunities to stop and take pictures and see the Quokka of course, would definitely recommend this way to see as much of the Island as possible, easy to book and use your tickets well organised.
Rottnest Ferries had great communication and everything went without a hitch. The morning tea was greatly appreciated, especially as we were there in plenty of time and it was nice to have somewhere cool to sit whilst waiting. A highlight for me was the train. The scenery and the many swallows foraging for food were wonderful and I very much enjoyed the tour of the tunnels. The highlights tour was very much that and is aimed to give you a flavour of what the island has to offer. The beaches all looked beautiful and so did wish I’d left some time to visit one but, if I do make it back to Perth, I would definitely spend nite time on the Island. However, this trip is a great way to catch a glimpse of the key things to see and do.
Very organised tour and didn’t have to worry about anything. Pick up location in Perth then about 30 minute drive to Hilarys boat harbour ferry where you are given your tickets and a free coffee/muffin voucher for cafe near ferry which was lovely (and a bottle of water). 45 minutes ferry ride to Rottnest. The aqua/teal water is stunning as you approach the island. The train has been closed due to major work needed on tracks so unfortunately had to catch the local bus to the gun tunnels and being a 42oC day on an unairconditioned bus was ridiculous but luckily it was a short trip (not tours fault). The tunnels were very interesting and provided some relief from the heat. Picked up in an Airconditioned bus this time for the bus tour. Had lunch (wrap, cake and drink - very nice) and met some gorgeous quokkas. Very good tour of the island with commentary and highly recommend as very big island and got to see all of it on the bus (hard slog if riding a bike in the heat). Had 3 stops; lookout, lighthouse, seals on rocks then back to main area shops for some souvenirs and lots of quokkas. Ferry back to boat harbour and bus to Perth. Wonderful tour especially if you want to be shown around and have everything organised for you. Small amount of walking and stairs near tunnels but optional. Great day despite the heat. Very friendly and helpful- I left my souvenirs on the ferry and the bus driver and ferry staff went above and beyond getting them back to me in Perth - thanks 😊
A beautiful Perth day our pick up arranged for a hotel about 1.5 Kilometres from our hotel. I maya telephone enquire about this in the prescribed up to 48 hours before departure and was told it was the best they could do and it was better than having to make our way the 20plus kilometres to Hillary’s. Very fly by the seat of your pants once on the ferry, no clear directions or staff who knew where we had to meet for our “grand island day tour”. Misdirected twice by staff, before finally finding the train station for pick up. Train ride up to Oliver Hill enjoyable, but no commentary and a well meaning tour guide who wasn’t really too concerned about numbers or people who hadn’t made it. We left volunteers escorted us around Oliver Hill and it was very interesting. Dealing with volunteers is great, but as volunteers there is the missing professionalism around time frames etc. once back on the train where we were handed our “lunch” a chicken salad wrap, no offer of water or a drink, also no serviettes or hand washing ability before eating, eaten on the journey back on the train. The onto a bus again a very lacks approach to who was on the bus we set off on our around island bus tour. One stop for photo opportunities and a commentary provided based upon the drivers own personal information , not scripted or recommended by the tour operator. Forget about the free time on the island we had about 11 minutes between leaving the bus tour and having to be back on the ferry for our return journey. A very full day of beautiful views but mis managed time. No desire to go back again
No attempt was made to advise that the train was not operational. Not at booking or anytime prior including when picking up tickets prior to boarding. Found out when we walked to train stop and found a locked bus with a small sign saying the bus was in place of train. Also the Lunch turned out to be a chicken wrap and a dry biscuit with a bottle of warm water on a 40 degree Celsius day. Surely its not too hard to have a cool box for the water. The sightseeing commentary was mostly boring by a disinterested driver. The driver had no idea how to quietly resolve a dietary issue which became embarrasing to the person involved because he made a loud big deal of it. The person advised their needs at booking weeks before. The person's husband had to purchase a protein alternative. The guide should have done this. Took away from the day's enjoyment. Guide said he would make a quokka stop "if time". Stopped for one minute but we couldn't get out for a decent photo. Only chance for us to see a quokka was for five minutes AFTER the tour finished before going to the return ferry. We paid for the most expensive experience which failed to deliver.
This day tour is a definate "Must Do" if you go to Rottnest Island. The scenery is absolutely stunning and our guide was very conversed on the islands history. Overall, it was a very enlightning experience but we felt that the visit to the WW11 gun and the tunnels was to long winded as a number of people with disabilities, were unable to negotiate the numerous stairs and tightness of the tunnels, and had to wait ages for their group to return. There is no mention of the number of stairs in the brochure, and no cheaper price for not doing the tunnels. Also, no one was informed that the train to the tunnels was out of action due to work being done to the sleepers. There was no price reduction for this change in the Itinerary, where a bus was substituted. We originally booked this Tour because it included the train. Another problem is the lack of signs to the different bus/train stations. There are none which left a lot of people very frustrated and confused. There are coloured, painted arrows on the road for the bus trip pick ups but no signs to say which Tour they are for,as each trip has a different pick up area. Very confusing..
